What is subcision for acne scar revision?
Subcision is a safe and simple treatment for acne scar revision that can be performed at our medical spa in Manchester, New Hampshire. At Pellé Medical Spa, we find that subcision is a great option for men and women with deep, or depressed, acne scars on the face.* Most acne scars appear red and fade over time, but deeper scars can become more permanent when scar tissue becomes interwoven with subcutaneous fat layers. If you feel frustrated with the deep or pockmarked rolling acne scars on your face, subcision may be the perfect treatment for you!*
How does subcision work?
Rolling acne scars and depressions are created when scar tissue pulls down the skin’s surface. Using a small needle, subcision works by stimulating the growth of collagen within the scar tissue.* This helps to reinvigorate cellular turnover, producing healthier, smoother skin at the surface.* The needle is also used to break up the scar tissue that tethers the skin, relieving depressions in the skin and causing scars to fade away.* This procedure can be performed on single depression lesions or on a hundred facial acne scars in one sitting!
What can I expect during the procedure?
When you come into Pellé Medical Spa for your treatment, your face will be cleansed and each individual acne scar will be marked with a pen. Using a local anesthetic, we will ensure that any discomfort you may feel will be minimized. After the anesthesia sets in, we will insert the needle into the acne scar and moved it back and forth to break up the scar tissue. The sharp edges of the needle creates a pocket beneath each scar and releases any tethering. Once all of the targeted acne scars are broken up, the procedure is over and pressure is applied to reduce any bleeding and swelling. We will then apply a topical ointment to prevent infection and encourage healing.
What can I expect from the results?
Results are often seen after several weeks, as new collagen growth takes time to develop.* Many of our patients see improvements to each scar with a single subcision treatment, though multiple sessions are typically required to achieve the desired outcome.* The number of sessions needed will vary, based on the age, depth, severity of your acne scar(s). On average, our patients usually need 3-6 subcision treatments to see optimal results.* Repeat sessions are usually done after 3-month intervals. You may experience swelling and bruising following treatments. These side effects tend to fade within the first week following your treatment.
Subcision can also be combined with microneedling for even smoother skin!*
