What are stretch marks?

Stretch marks (also known as striae distensa) are the streaky lines on the skin, especially on the abdomen and legs. These marks are caused by the rapid expansion of skin during pregnancy, or from obesity. This sudden stretching actually results in the tearing of the dermis (below the surface of the skin). These marks are notoriously difficult to treat, but thanks to aesthetic treatments, torn skin can be repaired without burning a hole in or damaging it.*

What are the causes?

Stretch marks are more likely to develop during these times:

  • Pregnancy
  • Sudden weight gain or loss
  • Grow spurts resulting from puberty
  • Weight training that results in rapid muscle growth

If members of your family get stretch marks, you will be at a higher risk. Fluctuating hormone levels can also play a role and increase the likelihood of these streaky lines.

What are the available treatments?

If you have tried lotions, creams or other home remedies that have failed to treat these marks, schedule an appointment at Pellé Medical Spa in Manchester, New Hampshire. We use microneedling to reduce stretch marks.* Microneedling is a form of collagen induction therapy. By creating micro-injuries in the skin, we can trigger your skin to produce new collagen and elastin. With increased collagen and elastin, your skin will see added firmness and improvements to its texture.
